Eye Shapes in Chinese Face Reading — Phoenix Eyes, Peach Blossom Eyes & More
In Chinese face reading, the eyes are the Officer of Supervision (监察官) — the feature that reveals emotional intelligence, romantic fortune and inner character, and that governs ages 35 to 40.
This guide explains the classic eye shapes of Mian Xiang — from phoenix eyes and peach blossom eyes to dragon, almond and sanpaku eyes — and what each one is said to reveal.
Why the Eyes Matter Most
Classical texts say the eyes hold shen (神) — the spirit or vitality of a person. Before looking at shape, a face reader looks at the gaze: steady, clear and bright eyes are considered fortunate whatever their shape, while dull or restless eyes weaken even an ideal shape.
Several palaces also sit around the eyes: the Marriage Palace (夫妻宫) at the outer corners, the Children Palace (子女宫) just below, and the Property Palace (田宅宫) between eye and brow. See the Twelve Palaces guide for how each one is read.
Eye Shapes and Their Meanings
Phoenix Eyes 凤眼
Shape: Long and narrow, with the outer corners lifting gently upward.
Meaning: Intelligence, poise and natural authority. One of the most admired eye shapes — linked to rising status and respect.
Peach Blossom Eyes 桃花眼
Shape: A soft curve, a moist, slightly dreamy gaze, and corners that make the eyes look like they are smiling.
Meaning: Charm, warmth and strong romantic luck. Popular and easily admired — relationships can become complicated by attention from others.
Dragon Eyes 龙眼
Shape: Large and bright, with a strong, steady gaze.
Meaning: Leadership, courage and big ambitions. Often seen in people who take charge naturally.
Almond Eyes 杏眼
Shape: Balanced, almond-shaped eyes with clear whites and dark irises.
Meaning: Sincerity, kindness and good judgment. A harmonious shape that suggests stable relationships.
Round Eyes 圆眼
Shape: Large and round, with much of the iris visible.
Meaning: Expressive, open and emotional. Quick to react and easy to read — warm-hearted but sometimes impulsive.
Long Narrow Eyes 细长眼
Shape: Slim, elongated eyes without a strong upward tilt.
Meaning: A deep, strategic thinker who keeps feelings private and plans ahead.
Downturned Eyes 下垂眼
Shape: Outer corners that slope slightly downward.
Meaning: Gentle, empathetic and accommodating. Good listeners who sometimes put others first at their own expense.
Sanpaku Eyes 三白眼
Shape: White visible on three sides of the iris — below (下三白) or above (上三白).
Meaning: Strong will and independence, paired with stubbornness. Traditionally read as a reminder to cultivate patience.
Phoenix Eyes vs Peach Blossom Eyes
These two are the most searched eye shapes, and they are easy to confuse because both lift at the outer corner. The difference is in the line and the gaze. Phoenix eyes are long and narrow with a clean, sharp line and a composed gaze — they read as dignified. Peach blossom eyes are softer and more curved, with a moist, smiling look — they read as warm and flirtatious.
In Mian Xiang terms, phoenix eyes lean toward career and status, while peach blossom eyes lean toward popularity and romance.
