Heart Line Meaning
Where it is · Common forms · Special marks
The heart line runs across the top of the palm. Palmistry reads it for how you express feelings, what you look for in close relationships and the warmth you bring to people. It describes emotional style, not how your love life will turn out.

The heart line starts at the outer edge of the palm below the little finger and runs across the upper palm toward the index or middle finger. It is the highest of the three main lines.
Where it ends varies: under the index finger, between the index and middle fingers, or under the middle finger. That end point is the first thing to look at.
Read it in order: first where it ends and how long it is, then its curve and depth, and only then details such as forks and breaks.
Common Forms and Their Meanings
These are the traditional readings of common heart line forms. A single line usually shows several of them; read them together.
The heart line has nothing to do with physical heart health, and it cannot predict how a relationship will end.
Special Marks
Small marks on the heart line are traditionally read as emotional changes during a period of life. They describe tendencies, not events that must happen.
Break
A shift in how you approach relationships or what matters most to you. If the ends overlap or a fine line bridges the gap, the change tends to be smooth.
Island
A small oval on the line: a stretch of worry or mixed feelings. A sign to talk things through with people you trust.
Chained
A line made of small loops: strong feelings that change quickly and a wide circle of friends. Look after your own moods too.
Crossing lines
Short lines cutting across: small emotional bumps or outside distractions, usually passing.
Rising branches
Short lines rising from the heart line: warm relationships and affection that comes easily.
Falling branches
Fine lines dropping downward: moments of disappointment or self-doubt. Openness and perspective help.
High or Low, the Simian Line and Two Hands
Position matters too. A heart line set high, close to the fingers, suggests someone who is forward and direct about feelings. One set low, closer to the head line, suggests someone who thinks things through before acting on emotion.
When the heart and head lines merge into a single line across the palm, it is called a simian line — see Simian Line Meaning.
It is normal for the heart lines on your two hands to differ. The non-dominant hand is read for your natural emotional temperament, the dominant hand for how experience has shaped it.
How the Heart Line Relates to Its Neighbours
The heart line is the highest of the three main lines. The head line runs below it, the marriage lines sit on the palm edge above it, and it ends on the mounts under the index or middle finger. Reading them together gives a fuller picture than the heart line alone.
With the head line
The space between the two lines is traditionally called the quadrangle. A wide, even quadrangle suggests openness and generosity; a narrow one, feelings easily coloured by worry and overthinking. If the two lines merge, it is a simian line.
With the marriage lines
The heart line is read for how you express feelings, the marriage lines for how deeply you commit. A long, deep heart line with a clear marriage line often goes with someone who values both affection and commitment. More in Marriage Line Meaning.
With the finger mounts
A heart line reaching the Mount of Jupiter under the index finger suggests ideals and high standards in love; one stopping at the Mount of Saturn under the middle finger suggests a practical wish for security. More in Mounts of the Palm.
Comparing Heart Lines with Someone Else
Many people like to compare heart lines with a partner or friend. The useful question is not whose line is "better" but how differently you each show feelings.
Say one person's heart line reaches under the index finger: they tend to put feelings into words and hope for a response. The other's ends under the middle finger: they tend to show care through actions. Knowing this makes it less likely that quietness is mistaken for not caring.
Or one heart line runs straight — even-tempered and level-headed — while the other curves upward, open and warm. Both styles have strengths; telling each other what you need works better than guessing.
Remember that lines cannot tell you whether two people are right for each other, and they cannot predict how a relationship will turn out. Treat them as a conversation starter and one more way to understand each other.
Questions
Does a short heart line mean bad luck in love?
No. A short heart line is traditionally read as independence and practicality — someone who shows care through actions. It does not decide how your relationships go.
What does a broken heart line mean?
Traditionally, a shift in how you approach relationships or your priorities — not a bad omen. If the ends overlap or a fine line connects them, the change tends to go smoothly.
What is a simian line?
A single line where the heart and head lines merge; it is neither good nor bad — see Simian Line Meaning.
Is the heart line linked to heart health?
No. In palmistry the heart line is read only for emotional style. It cannot tell you anything about your heart or physical health — see a doctor for that.
